JUNEAU, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A $2 million bond has been set for the man accused of abducting a pregnant teenager from Beaver Dam.
Gary Day, 40, of Arkansas, made his initial appearance in a Dodge County courtroom Thursday afternoon. He faces two counts of child abduction and two counts of child enticement, to which he pled not guilty.
WMTV-TV reports Day’s attorney asked for a $10,000 cash bail, saying it is a significant amount of money for him and Day understands the severity of the charges. The court commissioner, however, felt that Day’s lack of ties to Wisconsin and his prior criminal record make him an extreme flight risk, thus requiring a substantial cash bail, according to WMTV.
If Day does post bond, he was ordered to have no contact with Sophia Franklin, her family, or other minors.
Day was extradited Wednesday to Wisconsin from Nebraska, where he was arrested earlier this month.
Day was found April 2 at a truck stop near Omaha with 17-year-old Franklin, who is pregnant with his child. Franklin had been missing for two months and was the subject of an Amber Alert. She has since been reunited with her family.
Authorities have said Day and Franklin met online and there was a no contact order in place between the two. Police reported that while Day was on the run, he changed his appearance by growing a beard and mustache.
Day’s preliminary hearing was set for April 24.
