As winter weather recedes further into memory, a reminder of warmer weather has reappeared on Sheboygan Streets. That would be the Birds, not the flying kind, but the rentable scooters you can pick up to use and drop off when you’re done. Their introduction four years ago was initially met with lively discussion and skepticism, and the company that supplies them had to reorganize after filing bankruptcy. But the scooters themselves are doing fine and ready to rent, and the City is readying the users with reminders of the “dos” and “don’ts”.
The first thing you need in order to ride is the Bird app (go.bird.co/) so you can locate a nearby scooter and start the rental. Riders – who must be at least 18 years old, have to be the only one on the scooter, must stay in bike lanes or on the street, and are prohibited from using them on the sidewalk. Once the ride is over, users are directed to park the Bird either in a bike rack, or safely out of the pedestrian right-of-way. And if you don’t own a helmet, they’ve been made available for no charge at the Visit Sheboygan offices on South 8th Street and Riverfront Drive.
A 24/7 phone line is available from Bird for those with questions: 1-866-205-2442.
