Are mystery texts on your phone appearing at seemingly increasing frequency? That’s probably due to the spread of a scam, and not a wrong number from clumsy fingers on the phone pad.
Scammers are likely behind that message that seems to be meant for somebody’s good friend, discussing a get-together for dinner or a party, but with unfamiliar names. The sender would like nothing more than for you to respond to one of these messages, informing the sender of a wrong number. That would initiate an exchange that eventually leads to the What’sApp platform in order to solicit money, usually through cryptocurrency.
The Winnebago County Sheriff recently posted screen grabs of some actual scam messages which are currently making the rounds. If you receive such a message, the best policy is to ignore and delete it, avoiding what could become a costly conversation with a thief.
