A bill that extends Medicaid coverage for new moms from the current 60 days to a full year has cleared the State Senate with support of the Republican Leadership.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu (R-Oostburg) said after its passage on Tuesday that: “Extending postpartum coverage to twelve months improves health outcomes for both moms and babies. Providing this extension will ensure new mothers can keep their doctors during the crucial postpartum period, avoid costly emergency room usage, and reduce preventable maternal death.”
While Senate Bill 23 passed the State Senate 32-1, its fate in the Assembly isn’t assured. Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos indicated that he maintains the opinion he’s had from the beginning on the subject, stating that: “My position has been fairly clear from the very beginning. I’ve never supported an expansion of welfare, I can’t imagine that I would ever support one, but we have to talk about it as a Caucus and see where everybody else is.”
