A world of fantasy and learning is ready to open on May 1st for its 15th anniversary season. That place is Sheboygan’s Bookworm Gardens, a different world tucked into the woods between the UW Green Bay campus and Taylor Drive, where kids – and sometimes their grownups – can get lost in a place where books come alive.
A collaboration has been announced in celebration of the anniversary as Bookworm is just weeks away from its annual Readers’ Roundup Garden event. This year, they will partner with the Hmong American Peace Academy, or “HAPA” of Milwaukee to mark the 50th anniversary of the settling in the US of the Hill People of Laos who fled after the end of the war in southeast Asia.
Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17th, the Readers’ Roundup Community Day will focus on the book: A Map into the World by Kao Kalia Yang which explores themes of home, memory, and belonging as seen through the eyes of a young refugee Hmong girl navigating her new world. Accordingly, this year’s new garden creation will be designed and planted by 4K through high school HAPA scholars, bringing the book to life in foliage and flowers.
Once completed next month, the Map of the World garden will remain open through the season that closes on Halloween.
