A seeming never-ending shortage of qualified workers is being attacked by a new collaborative program between the UW-Green Bay and Lakeshore College. The FORWARD program is designed to help students save both time and money by completing their classes without leaving the region that needs them. All classes are offered locally at the Lakeshore College Cleveland Campus, the UW-Green Bay Campus and online.
The program will welcome its first class this fall according to Lakeshore College President Dr. Paul Carlsen, who said that partnering with a four-year college to directly address acute workforce needs is uncommon in the education community, especially given that other communities are seeing a divestment in higher education.
Sheboygan County Administrator Alayne Krause called the program “transformative for Sheboygan County”, as the expanded access to affordable, high-quality education in the two high-demand fields both opens doors for local students, as well as invests in the future of the communities’ well-being and workforce.
To illustrate the demands for workers, the SASD currently has 36 open positions posted on its website, with a $4,000 signing bonus offered for Special Education teachers. As for nursing, the website Indeed lists more than 50 openings in the nursing field within 35 miles of Sheboygan, many offering over $50 per hour to qualified candidates.
