(WTAQ-WLUK) — As lawmakers continue to work on Wisconsin’s next two-year spending plan, there’s been constant talks between Democrats and Republicans as of late.
Even as time to do so dwindles, the goal remains to have a new budget signed and passed on time before the new fiscal year starts on July 1st.
Joint Finance Committee member, State Representative Alex Dallman of Markesan says that negotiations between Governor Tony Evers, GOP leadership and Joint Finance Committee co-chairs continued through the end of this past week.
Governor Evers says he thinks everything is moving forward and that the budget will be done on time.
“Well we’re working with it, I think so. Yes, I’m hopeful it’s on time,” responded Evers. “You know, we’ve got a long, long way to go. But, I feel confident that people are being honest with each other and hopefully we’ll get it done.”
At their most recent budget session, the heads of Joint Finance were tight-lipped about those discussions.
“Yeah, I don’t think we’re going to talk about the conversations with the Governor so we’re pleased that he’s meeting with us and our conversations are ongoing. That’s about it,” said Joint Finance Committee Co-Chair, State Rep. Mark Born, R-Beaver Dam on Friday, June 30th.
Items such as education funding have not yet been taken up at length by Joint Finance, though it’s sure to be a major part of negotiations.
“People want a good, productive investment in higher education. But, not with the bloat and I hope we can dial that in real good and come to a conclusion there,” said State Sen. Eric Wimberger, R-Oconto, a member of the Joint Finance Committee.
“It reminds me of last time where, you know, the Joint Finance Committee threw everything out but then kept some things. At the end of the day, we came to conclusions and, you know we’re a purple state, everybody should have a opportunity to weigh in and that’s what we’re doing,” said Evers.
