If you hear what seems to be explosions overhead, you may be hearing the sounds of military exercises by supersonic fighter jets.
The 2025 Sentry North exercise, previously known as Northern Lightning, will result in increased flight activity over central Wisconsin now through June 15th. F-16s and other military aircraft are scheduled to train between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. The Wisconsin Air National Guard noted that its aircraft, while flying above 30,000 feet, are authorized by the FAA to exceed supersonic speeds, creating a “sonic boom” that may carry down to ground level. When not exceeding the speed of sound, a continuous, low “roar” will betray the presence of the fighter jets overhead.
While the most available airspace for military exercises exists over Lake Michigan, the National Guard advised that Adams, Brown, Calumet, Clark, Columbia, Dodge, Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Jackson, Juneau, Manitowoc, Marathon, Marquette, Monroe, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Portage, Shawano, Sheboygan, Trempealeau, Washington, Waupaca, Waushara, Winnebago and Wood Counties could all experience the Sonic Booms.
