Whether on land or in the water, the National Weather Service says there are good reasons to be cautious today.
A Beach Hazard Statement was issued on Monday and remains in effect until after a cold front passes through this evening. That’s because conditions will generate life threatening waves of 3 to 6 feet along with strong currents that can make swimming dangerous. Rip currents that can sweep one into deep water will also be possible.
The weather system responsible for danger on Lake Michigan will also threaten to produce locally heavy rainfall on land this afternoon as lines of thunderstorms are generated along the cold front. Some of those storms, especially in a narrow band from Rock to Ozaukee Counties, could train repeatedly over the same area, eventually dropping two or more inches of water, causing urban and small stream flooding.
Once the storms move out, showers will probably linger into mid morning Wednesday, and temperatures will cool into the low 60s.
