Although no formal actions were taken by the City of Sheboygan upon the resignation of former City Attorney Charles Adams, a vote of the Committee of the Whole after a closed session indicates that the process that could result in legal proceedings is far from over.
The Committee met in closed session on Monday night to discuss what, if anything, could be done in response to allegations that Attorney Charles Adams engaged in unauthorized access to data and emails from City employees. Adams eventually also hired outside legal representation, bypassing official rules in the process. Adams resigned his position immediately after an initial report on his actions was received, a move which, at the time, was described as in the best interests of all involved.
Following last night’s closed session, Alderman Dean Dekker moved to assure a clear road ahead for further proceedings by allowing the temporary suspension of Attorney-Client Privilege and the redaction of the names of City employees interviewed in developing the initial report. The unanimous vote in approval ensures that the identities of city employees that were interviewed as part of the initial investigation will be protected when that report is released.
