Another round of scams is likely to show up on a cellphone of yours or someone you know. The latest method arrives as a text purportedly from the Wisconsin DMV that’s designed to lead you a website that will steal your personal information. Another making the rounds is a phone call from someone impersonating the local Sheriff, trying to convince the victim to pay up in order to avoid being arrested or fined.
As usual, the real Sheriffs from Sheboygan and surrounding Counties will never call to inform you of a warrant or fine – in that case you’d be greeted in-person by a real officer, and you can always just hang up and call local law enforcement to assure you’re not in trouble.
The DMV text scam is a bit more complicated. The text looks official, mentions a Wisconsin Administrative Code number, and instructs you to either pay through a link accessed within the message, or else face suspended registration, fines or other penalties. If you do what the message says, your personal data will be stolen and likely used to steal more money.
The experts always advise to avoid clicking any links contained in such messages, and to contact local law enforcement if you feel you’ve been scammed.
