The Sheboygan Police Department has issued a “heads-up” about enforcement efforts during June. A social media release on Saturday informed readers that tailgating is a form of aggressive driving that threatens not only tickets, but also crashes, and they’ll be on the lookout.
Police stressed that it’s a matter of safety and reaction time, as the lead motorist may need to brake suddenly to avoid pedestrians, unexpected hazards, or stop for traffic signals. Without enough space, that can lead to crashes and injuries.
So, how close is too close? Police say that the three-second rule is a good gauge. Start counting three seconds when the vehicle ahead passes an object, and make sure you’re not passing that mark any sooner than 3 seconds. That’s for ideal conditions, and you can add more for weather, roadway hazards or other factors. If you don’t, you may be followed by the flashing lights and siren of an SPD team issuing a ticket.
