The last day of spring will be a pleasant Friday with afternoon temperatures in the mid-upper 70s. Summer arrives at 9:20 tonight, and the first day of summer could be anything BUT pleasant as temperatures and humidity soar, with a Heat Advisory issued by the National Weather Service from noon on Saturday until 7 PM Monday evening.
It could be worse – Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha Counties have an Extreme Heat Warning in effect for the same hours, meaning anyone attending events there could expect heat index values up to 105 degrees. Here in Sheboygan County, it will be only slightly better with values hitting the mid 90s Saturday, 100 on Sunday and then the upper 90s on Monday.
Such heat can be a killer if care isn’t taken to get through the hot spell. Those working outdoors need to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible. Pets and kids should never be left in a closed vehicle, and so check before you lock it up. If you have air conditioning, use it, and if you or someone you know doesn’t have it, make sure options such as going to a public place like a library or shopping mall to cool off are available. Or, you could jump into Lake Michigan where the water temperature is just 53 degrees.
Relief comes Tuesday when air temperatures hover around 71 degrees.
