A boat outing on a Winnebago County lake last night could have turned tragic, but fortunately everyone is safe. The Winnebago County Communications Center got the 911 call of a submerged boat shortly after 8 PM, sending Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputies and responders from surrounding communities to the site on Lake Poygan where rescue boats were launched from numerous locations. The search went on for several hours in darkness before two adults and three juveniles were located and safely taken to shore.
The 40-year-old Omro man operating the boat said they were traveling South on Lake Poygan when the boat experienced mechanical issues, shutting down the engine. The boat then began taking on water and quickly sank beneath the surface. The five aboard the boat had grabbed coolers and used them as floatation devices until rescuers located them. They were evaluated by EMS on the scene and released.
