Both pro-life and pro-choice advocates are sharing their reactions to the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s ruling on the state’s abortion law yesterday. In a four-to-three decision, the court found that a ban on killing an unborn child initially passed in Wisconsin in the mid-1800’s is no longer enforceable.
Planned Parenthood Wisconsin spokesperson Michelle Velasquez says members of the organization are “relieved and grateful” that the court is recognizing what patients and providers have always known about reproductive rights.
Sheboygan Falls Republican Representative Lindee Brill, however, called the decision “pre-determined”, and “partisan”. Commenting after its decision was released Thursday morning, Brill said that “The Liberal majority in the Supreme Court clearly demonstrated today that they’ll find any way to ensure that the genocide of the unborn will continue in Wisconsin…”, and to “Make no mistake, they knew before any brief was submitted or argument was made for what their decision was going to be.”
The case, “Kaul v. Urmanski” was a challenge filed by Sheboygan District Attorney Joel Urmanski in an attempt to uphold Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban. The liberal majority in the Court, however, opined that laws passed since then effectively render that 19th Century law invalid. Urmanski declined to comment immediately on the decision when asked by WHBL News, saying: “I appreciate the request, but at this time I am not making a comment.” He left open the possibility of saying something in the future.”
