The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services will be distributing more than $616,000 to Sheboygan County Fire Departments. The funds are part of the Wisconsin 2% Fire Dues Program. More than $36 million will be shared statewide, a 12% increase over last year’s distribution.
The Fire Dues Program requires insurance companies to pay 2% of premiums collected for insurance against loss from fires. The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance collects the dues, and the Department of Safety and Professional Services distributes the money to cities, towns and villages across the state according to a prescribed formula. Payments in Sheboygan County range from $2,197.52 to the Town of Russell, to a high of $206,871.78 to the City of Sheboygan.
In addition to protective gear, fire departments have used proceeds to purchase fire engines, ladder trucks, and fire suppression equipment. Checks will be sent out via mail next week.
