Circulation of false information surrounding the Tuesday drowning of a 13-year-old boy in the Sheboygan Quarry has led to one arrest.
The Sheboygan Police Department said on Thursday afternoon that an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and consistent responses to investigators, have all led to the conclusion that no foul play was involved, and all available information supports that this was a tragic and heartbreaking accident.
In the aftermath, Sheboygan Police say that false and misleading information was circulated on social media. That misinformation has contributed to heightened emotions and the exchange of threats among community members online. As a result of investigations into those exchanges, one arrest has already been made.
The SPD is urging the public to be responsible when sharing information online, and to verify facts before re-posting what may only be speculation or rumor.
