When it came to Wednesday’s thunderstorms in Sheboygan County, it was like real estate: it’s all about “location-location-location”. While the “official” rain gauge at the Sheboygan County airport received only eight-hundredths of an inch, that was an outlier. National Weather Service and citizen storm reports painted a much different picture in other places.
Those reports started coming in at around 5:30 with the City of Plymouth reporting many streets flooding there. Shortly afterwards, multiple trees and large branches were blown down in Kohler and a power pole there was reported on fire. An automated wind gauge on the North Breakwall Lighthouse experienced a 51 mph gust at around 5:50PM and a waterspout was reported offshore as well.
Later on, reports of flooding were received from Howards Grove where just under 5-inches (4.9”) of rain fell in just under 2 hours. 2-1/4 inches fell a few miles north of Kohler, and Sheboygan experienced street flooding at both 14th and Erie Avenue and 15th and Mayflower, among others.
The storms were along a cold front that displaced the muggy air that had dominated the last few days, and we’ll now experience cooler than normal weather right through the weekend before the 80s return next week.
