The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin has announced that those in need who’ve had their electricity disconnected for non-payment can request a reconnect during periods of excessive heat.
Wisconsin law prohibits a utility from disconnecting customers while a heat advisory, heat warning, or heat emergency issued by the National Weather Service is in effect. Also, reasonable attempts are required to reconnect service to an occupied dwelling that has been disconnected for nonpayment as long as an occupant states that there’s a potential threat to health or life because of that disconnection. In some cases this might require a confirming statement or notice from either a licensed physician, or an official from public health, social services or law enforcement. Once the heat emergency ends, the utility can again disconnect if arrangements haven’t been made to pay the bill.
Meanwhile, the PSC had tips for everyone to beat the heat, including closing blinds and curtains, unplugging electronics when not in use, ensuring that the air conditioner system is clean and maintained, washing clothes and dishes when it’s cool at night, and turning off the lights when leaving a room.
