A semi driver suffered serious injuries when bales of paper he was hauling entered the cab during an early Wednesday morning accident.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the Highway 151 exit ramp to South Main Street in the Town of Fond du Lac shortly after 1:30 this morning. A 911 caller reported that a semi-tractor and trailer were in the ditch, and the condition of the driver couldn’t be determined because of the damage.

Two good samaritans were attempting to help the driver when deputies arrived. He was trapped in the cab by bales of paper that were propelled through the front of the trailer during impact. The Sergeant and Deputies, along with the good samaritans, managed to free the driver, identified as a 60-year-old New Holstein man. He was first transported to St. Agnes Hospital, and then flighted by ThedaStar helicopter to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah for treatment of serious injuries.

Initial investigation shows the driver had failed to slow sufficiently in order to make the turn onto the ramp and instead continued into the ditch, sending the bales through the trailer and causing significant damage to the cab.
A full investigation is still underway.
