Look at this chuckle nuts. People like this and everyone like him couldn’t shut up about the 11-game Brewer winning streak yesterday. “They’re one away from the George Webb free burger streak!” “It’s only happened twice since the promo started in the 40’s!” “We are one win, I repeat, ONE WIN away from free burgers!” And on and on it went.
Hey, fella, ever hear of a jinx? We know you love to hear the sound of your own voice but maybe chill out when everyone’s favorite team is knocking on the door of a milestone win. Thanks.
In all seriousness, something like last night was bound to happen. That’s why win streaks like the one the Brewers were on are incredible. Baseball is every single day, and at some point you’re going to run into a really good pitcher having a great day like the Brewers did last night. I’m not sure Logan Gilbert is a household name for more casual baseball fans, but he’s been REALLY good over the last 3/4 seasons in Seattle, and he was locked in last night. Basically untouchable for 6 1/3.
The frustrating thing about last night was that the pitching staff was up to the task! As expected we got a shorter start from Miz last night*, but the bullpen only made one mistake, and it was to the guy leading the league in home runs. The Big Dumper didn’t miss a middle-middle fastball, and that was all the Mariners needed in a 1-0 win.
Side note, it’s not the sole reason they lost last night, but these calls on Issac Collins in the 9th inning STUNK:
You’ve got two guys on with only one out, if Collins gets on there the bases are loaded and a sac fly ties the game. I realize (kind of) that umps aren’t going to be perfect, but that’s precisely why the ABS review system needs to be implemented for games immediately. They tried it in Spring Training and it worked, they tried it during the All Star game and it worked, just use it in normal games already. You have the technology to get the calls right, so, and I can’t emphasis this last point enough, GET THE CALLS RIGHT.
All in all a hell of a ride during the streak. Two sweeps of the Dodgers, the return of Woodruff, Miz mowing guys down, it was a pleasure! Now it’s a dead heat in the NL Central (and for a 1 or 2 seed in the NL) with a little over two months to go. Buckle up.
*I talked about this a few weeks back on some morning shows and on the podcast, I think it’s going to be fascinating to watch how the use Misiorowski down the stretch. Even though we all want him out there every 5 days going 6-7 innings, they’ve got to be careful with a once-in-a-lifetime arm. He’s already within 10 innings of the most he’s pitched at any level. It wouldn’t shock me if we see more ‘opener’ type starts like we saw last night, where they set a pitch limit and he only goes 2-3 innings. I think the possibility exists that he becomes a high-leverage bullpen arm at some point as well, a la Josh Hader in 2018. We’ll see.
PS: You know who the winner was yesterday? George Webb. Got ALL of the publicity of the streak and the burger promo, and then didn’t have to order a thousand pounds of burgers today. I haven’t been to Webb’s in a minute, but I would have made the trip to cash in a free burger. Still a quality greasy spoon if you’ve never been. Great place to get a large amount of food for a small price and then fight off diarrhea all day.
