It’s a simple message – and a simple act – but with an increasingly important goal: Lock your vehicle and take your keys. Entry into unlocked vehicles isn’t new, but it’s getting more common and more serious in Sheboygan as evidenced by someone recently losing their handgun after failing to lock up the car. The Sheboygan Police Department says that entry into unlocked vehicles gets more common when the weather warms up, and they say that it’s up to the operator to secure their vehicles and belongings against such “crimes of opportunity”, and the SPD has a few helpful tips for people to follow.
First, lock up and take your keys with you. They said that virtually all stolen vehicles in Sheboygan are due to keys being left in the vehicle overnight or while unattended.
Second, remove all valuables from the vehicle, and don’t leave things in clear view from the outside. Your vehicle is less attractive to thieves when nothing worth taking can be seen. Items that especially attract thieves include money, a purse, firearms and prescription medication.
Finally, lock your vehicle and close all windows when you leave it. The SPD says that almost every theft from a vehicle that happens in Sheboygan is made possible by the operator simply failing to secure that vehicle entirely, and they hope that by following these simple steps, people will do their part to reduce the crime.
